AMD today held a presentation to unveil its first exascale general-purpose Instinct MI200 series graphics gas pedals. The new products are designed for high performance computing (HPC) and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm acceleration.
The series includes two gas pedal models, the Instinct MI250 and Instinct MI250X. AMD calls the latter the highest-performing graphics gas pedal of its class. According to the vendor, the Instinct MI250X gas pedal provides 4.9 times more performance than competing solutions in double precision computing (FP64) and a peak theoretical performance above 380 Tflops in half precision computing (FP16), such as machine learning and neural networking workloads. Features of the Instinct MI250 and Instinct MI250X GPUs include the new 2.5D Elevated Fanout Bridge (EFB) package, which involves using a «suspended» over the substrate bridge to connect the GPU to HBM memory. Two CDNA 2 architecture-based GPU crystals connected to each other and other GPU elements via AMD Infinity Fabric 3rd generation bus are used in gas pedal GPUs. The Instinct MI250 graphics chip features 208 processing units for a total of 13 312 stream processors. The Instinct MI250X has 220 GPUs with a total of 14,080 stream processors. Both models are equipped with 128 GB of HBM2e video memory. Together with the hardware novelties, the company introduced Radeon Open eCosystem 5.0 (ROCm 5.0) & ; a hyper-scalable open-source platform designed to accelerate computing by combining chips of different classes (CPU, GPU, FPGA, etc.), which does not depend on programming language. AMD Instinct MI250 and Instinct MI250X computing gas pedals are already available in OCP Accelerator Module (OAM) format. The company also plans to release the new products in the form of expansion cards called AMD Instinct MI210, which will be designed for OEM servers. Instinct MI250X gas pedals have already appeared as part of HPE's Cray EX supercomputer. In the first quarter of next year, the new series of gas pedals will be available to AMD's major OEM and ODM partners, including ASUS, ATOS, Dell Technologies, Gigabyte, Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Lenovo and Supermicro.
