First user tests Radeon RX 6950 XT - super flagship or disappointment of the year from TG

If you follow the computer world news, you should know that AMD has not pleased its fans in recent years.
Engineers have made several unsuccessful attempts to release a high-performance graphics chip, but each time everything crashed against the reality of modern game engines.
As it turned out, the HBM high speed video memory does not solve anything at all, that is why every announcement of the next generation was perceived with increasing share of skepticism.
And Radeon RX 6000 line was not an exception, because only the biggest optimists could believe that the flagship Radeon RX 6900 XT would be able to compete with the GeForce RTX 3090.
Despite a series of unfortunate decisions, we still got a decent product.
It was not without its flaws, because AMD never managed to offer effective ray tracing technology.
And yet, the Radeon RX 6900 XT is much cheaper than its direct competitor, and the 7000 series is coming, the performance of which promises to secure the red leader's jersey.AdvertisementWhether the rumors are true about this, we will know this fall, but for now let's go back to what is happening in the graphics card market right now.
If you remember, a pumped-up GeForce RTX 3090 Ti graphics chip recently went on sale.
He put on his shoulder long resisted green Radeon RX 6900 XT, but the price difference between graphics chips is up to two times, which means a few extra percent cost NVIDIA extremely expensive.
AMD didn't stand aside and decided to release a faster flagship, which instead of 16Gb/s video memory got the same amount at 18Gb/s.
Before the announcement it seemed that there is going to be a clash of giants, only in the official press release we saw that Radeon RX 6950 XT is not going to compete with GeForce RTX 3090 Ti, but GeForce RTX 3090 is frankly slow in the diagram.
This sort of thing raised questions from the Testing Games team.
Bloggers took three graphics cards and ran them through popular tests.
Unfortunately, GeForce RTX 3090 Ti could not be found, so we have to limit ourselves to the available data.
All tests were done in 4K resolution, settings are close to maximum, Core i9-12900K was used as a processor.
Below you can see the indicators grouped in a table.Usually we summarize with averages for each video card, but this time the whole thing is spoiled by the results in Hitman 3.
The thing is that absolutely everywhere the difference between graphics chips is linear, while in this game the new Radeon RX 6950 XT has a huge lead over its rival in the form of GeForce RTX 3090.
That is why the calculations on the average performance will not fit the overall picture, which is what we will talk about.
As you can see, in most games the Radeon RX 6950 XT still lags behind the GeForce RTX 3090.
In fact, the difference is minimal and often not more than a few percent, but the gap is there and the victory is on the side of NVIDIA.
If you came here just for that percentage expecting to see the victory of AMD, then we hasten to disappoint you.In some projects Radeon RX 6900 XT strengthened the leadership, while in most projects it could not get ahead of the green flagship.
Well, considering the fact that there are GeForce RTX 3090 Ti on sale, we have nothing to please fans of Lisa Su yet.
And in general it is worth remembering that there are several games in which Radeon RX 6950 XT shows results on the level of GeForce RTX 3090 and even higher, but many of them are not included in the list of this test.
As for the confrontation that will unfold in the fall of 2022, AMD's victory is not as obvious as some people think.
The problem is that there are rumors of an NVIDIA flagship with 24Gbps video memory.
AMD with its 18 Gbit/s will not look serious on its background.
If you are just happy with one of the fastest graphics cards on the market which you can buy 2 times cheaper than competitors' superflagship, then Radeon RX 6950 XT will seem like a gift of fate.
But in case you were expecting an uncompromising victory, the Radeon RX 6950 XT really looks disappointing. For the post rewardedThis material is written by a site visitor and it is rewarded.

Radeon RX 6950 XT reviews: 10% faster than the regular RX 6900 XT, but still slower than the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti in 4K

AMD today released the Radeon RX 6950 XT, RX 6750 XT and RX 6650 XT graphics cards.
They are updated Radeon RX 6900 XT, RX 6700 XT and RX 6600 XT, but with slightly faster GPUs, faster memory and higher TDP.
In the current reality we have to rely on the experience of our western colleagues, who have already had a chance to get acquainted with these cards.
In this article, let's discuss the flagship Radeon RX 6950 XT based on reviews from Tom's Hardware, Guru3D and TechPowerUp resources.Image source: Tom's HardwareThe Radeon RX 6950 XT is built on the same 7nm Navi 21 GPU as the regular Radeon RX 6900 XT, only it is labeled KXTX instead of XTX.
It includes 80 compute blocks with 5,120 stream processors, 320 texture blocks, 128 rasterization blocks and 80 ray trace acceleration blocks.
The GPU has a benchmark gaming frequency of 2100 MHz (85 MHz higher than the RX 6900 XT), and in Boost mode it goes up to 2310 MHz (60 MHz higher than its predecessor).
The novelty is equipped with 16 GB of GDDR6 RAM with 256-bit bus.
The data transfer rate is 18 Gbit/s per pin.
Due to this its bandwidth is not 512 GB/s as it is in regular Radeon RX 6900 XT but 576 GB/s.
It also has a high speed 128 MB Infinity Cache buffer.
Rated power consumption (TGP) of video card at reference frequencies is 335 W, which is 35 W higher than that of Radeon RX 6900 XT.Image source: Guru3DThe novelty is available both in AMD reference design and as proprietary solutions of the company's partners.
Tom's Hardware journalists examined Sapphire Radeon RX 6950 XT Nitro+ Pure (first photo), Guru3D resource got the MSI Radeon RX 6950 XT Gaming X Trio (second photo).
TechPowerUp portal was able to get the graphics card in several versions at once.
For coverage, let's take data from Gigabyte Radeon RX 6950 XT Gaming OC (in the third photo).
All of them have massive and efficient cooling systems and have additional factory overclocking of the GPU.
The latter, although it adds a few frames per second in games depending on the version of the video card, the overall picture is not affected.
Radeon RX 6950 XT even with reference specifications turned out to be very fast in games.
But only without ray tracing, in which it is inferior even to the model two classes below - GeForce RTX 3080 10GB.
However, more about that below.Image source: TechPowerUpWe have tested Radeon RX 6950 XT in 25 games, the novelty was on average 9% faster than its predecessor.
The resource Tom's Hardware, which tested the gas pedal in 8 games, the difference was 10% in favor of the new card.
Guru3D reports similar results based on tests of 9 games.
If we talk directly about the competitors, on average Radeon RX 6950 XT is 1-2% faster than GeForce RTX 3090, but about 7% slower than GeForce RTX 3090 Ti.
We are, of course, talking about the gas pedal performance in games at 4K resolution and at maximum graphics settings.Games 2160p control-3840-2160.png See all images (16) elden-ring-3840-2160.png GD4SQA2btq23BRR8.png god-of-war-3840-2160.

In this case, Tom's Hardware notes that the Radeon gas pedal was on average 3 percent faster than the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti and 9 percent faster than the regular Radeon RX 6900 XT.
TechPowerUp and Guru3D data are similar.

New Radeon RX 6950 XT graphics card failed to beat GeForce RTX 3090 Ti in official AMD tests

New generation of NVIDIA and AMD graphics cards will go on sale this fall.
We are promised a 2x performance increase due to architectural changes and 5nm process.
Add to this the conquest of extreme clock speeds, which as a result should become a driver for the development of the gaming sector, which in recent years has been frankly slow.
But this is all the prospect of the second half of 2022, while today we need to prove the ability to produce the fastest graphics chips on the planet.
If you think that the GeForce RTX 3090 is still at the top, you are very mistaken, because for some time now a pumped up version of the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti has been available in limited sales.
It is this graphics chip has finally secured the right to be called the fastest on the planet.
It seems that today everything became complicated again.advertisementO AMD plans to release an updated series of graphics cards became known a few months ago.
At the same time, the first leaks and specifications leaked to the press.
As it turned out, the insiders were completely right, as engineers decided not to strain, being limited to replacing the video memory to a faster 18 Gbps.
In addition, the TDP value was increased, which should remove some of the limitations during peak performance.
Today is the day when the masks are dropped and AMD makes an official press release.
Nothing fundamentally new there, but it will be useful to look at the comparative graphics of the updated series.First of all let's turn to the Radeon RX 6950 XT.
As you can see, the fastest video card of the red team easily beats the GeForce RTX 3090.
It is really a victory, because the latter has a much faster video memory and 384 bit bus against AMD's 256 bit.
But the GeForce RTX 3090 Ti could not cope with it.
Apparently, a complete victory of Radeon RX 6950 XT is noticeable only in two games, while in all other games we have to state a slight advantage of NVIDIA.
There's nothing surprising really, because the green ones managed to overclock their video memory up to unbelievable 24 Gbps while the red ones have only 18 Gbps.
The fact is that even the regular version (Radeon RX 6700 XT) has parity with the GeForce RTX 3070.
Somewhere the reds come out ahead, while sometimes the greens manage to do so.
Radeon RX 6750 XT turned out to be slightly faster, while the real performance gain is minimal.
It's about the same with the Radeon RX 6650 XT versus the GeForce RTX 3060.
Even the regular version of Radeon RX 6600 XT had an advantage over the NVIDIA's mid-range, well, the updated graphics chip does not show any significant breakthroughs. It is especially impressive how AMD is trying to confuse the reader.
The fact is that it is impossible to compare the results of all released graphics cards, because they were tested in different resolutions.
It turns out that in order to understand the real performance gain on the lower graphics chips we will have to wait for the tests from enthusiasts and expert teams.
For now, let us note again that the miracle did not happen, but it does not mean that the Radeon RX 6950 XT turned out bad.
Rather, it showed problems with access to fast memory, which will only get worse, because the next generation of AMD graphics chips will also be devoid of high-speed GDDR6X.For the post rewardedThis material is written by a site visitor, and it is rewarded.
