Ryzen 5000 secured record sales of AMD processors in one of German stores in November

The deficit of AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards, as well as AMD Ryzen 5000 CPUs this autumn prompted many online stores to openly share statistics on the number of copies received for implementation. November data from a German online store shows that not so few Ryzen 5000 processors were shipped.

Ingebor enthusiast who collects such statistics on a regular basis on Reddit pages reported that in November German online store MindFactory managed to sell about 5500 copies of AMD processors of Ryzen 5000 family before stocks were exhausted. If we compare this number with the results of the first month of presence of Ryzen 3000 processors on the market, it will be almost twice less. But on the other hand, in the case of the Ryzen 5000, the bill goes to thousands of copies, not hundreds or tens, as in the case of AMD and NVIDIA graphics cards of the latest families.

In fact, in November, MindFactory was able to sell a record number of AMD processors since 2015. In a sequential comparison, it increased by more than one and a half times. Sales volumes of Intel processors also increased in November, but not so noticeably. The balance of power in the range of products MindFactory looked as follows: 84 % for AMD and 16 % for Intel & ; both in physical and monetary terms.

Six-core AMD Ryzen 5 5600X generally broke into the fourth line of popularity of a particular store, in November it was sold 3020 copies. This is more than half of all sold in a month Vermeer processor family. On the second position broke out Ryzen 5 3600XT, it gave way to its place Ryzen 7 3800X. Closes a dozen bestsellers 12-core Ryzen 9 5900X, which has a circulation of 1500 copies. Eight-core Ryzen 7 5800X is satisfied with the 13th place and 1170 realized copies. First place still confidently takes Ryzen 5 3600;

In terms of revenue, all three processors of the Vermeer family have entered the top ten most popular in the same sequence, and Ryzen 9 5900X due to the relatively high price lags behind the leading Ryzen 5 5600X very slightly. In this ranking, the flagship 16-core Ryzen 9 5950X got 19th place, although in physical terms, it did not get into the top twenty at all.

AMD Ryzen 5000 processor crystals are studied under a microscope: the layout of the cores has really become better

Enthusiasts regularly take apart new processors to see how they are arranged, and not only for the sake of science, but primarily for the sake of viewing and attention in social networks. Processors are not always able to survive such experiments, which is especially noticeable by the fresh acquaintance with the anatomy of Ryzen 5 5600X, which confirms the changes in the layout of the crystals taken by AMD.

AMD's Technical Marketing Director Robert Hallock spoke about innovations in the structure of chipsets containing Zen 3 processing cores a few days before Ryzen 5000 processors were sold from the YouTube platform. The eight cores on the crystal are now combined into a single complex, each of the cores has equal access to a shared Level 3 cache. The first experiments to remove the lid from Ryzen 5 5600X processors have confirmed that the crystal with computing cores after switching to the architecture Zen 3 slightly increased in length. According to official data, the area of the crystal has increased from 74 to 81 mm2, by 9 %. The number of transistors on the crystal increased, according to official data, by 350 million pieces.

The famous master of macro photography of electronic components, Fritzchens Fritz, recently published images of Ryzen 5 5600X crystal with computational cores. The process of removing the lid from the processor, which is held on solder as before, was not completed without consequences for the crystal & ; as a result, it was partially destroyed. However, just because of this risk in such situations on the table of the pathologist gets exactly the youngest model of the family, as the cheapest.

When compared to the layout of the Zen 2 chip, the Infinity Fabric bus controller shifts from the central area where it was previously needed to communicate between blocks of cores to the periphery of the chip. These changes are precisely the result of the changes in core layouts that Robert Hallock described; the cores are no longer divided between two segments, but belong to a single complex. Measurements made by the enthusiast indicate other dimensions of the chipsets with computational cores: the area is 75.75 mm2 for Zen 2 and 83.74 mm2 for Zen 3. Unlike AMD, which only takes into account the area of useful crystal elements in measurements, the author of the photos takes into account the total area of a silicon crystal. This method allows us to state that the crystal area has increased by about 11 % compared to its predecessor. The performance of the Ryzen 5000 processors has increased by more than 9-11 %, so the implemented changes justify themselves economically. The more compact the crystal is, the cheaper it is in production. AMD in its time switched to multi-crystal layout just for reasons of economy.

Snapshots of 12nm crystal with I/O logic allowed to confirm that it has not undergone any changes in comparison with representatives of Zen 2 architecture. This is also indicated by the words of Robert Hallock, who last week said from the social networking pages that the memory controller on Zen 3 processors is the same, and it is located on « central » the crystal.

The immutability of this crystal is beneficial for AMD in terms of unification. However, logistically, such a division is not quite convenient. The large central crystal is produced using 12nm technology by GlobalFoundries at its facility in the U.S., while smaller 7nm crystals with computational cores are produced in Taiwan by TSMC. Mounting of these elements on the textolite and testing of the finished processors are engaged in the enterprises in Malaysia and China, so the labeling on their cap mentions three countries of origin.

AMD Ryzen 5 5600X noted in additional tests with overclocking - again out of competition

On the pages of HWBot website, the results of testing the Ryzen 5 5600X processor appeared before the ban on publishing reviews, because in the hands of a British enthusiast, a copy of this processor bypassed the official channels. This made it possible to understand what the novelty is capable of when working at frequencies from 4.7 to 4.9 GHz.

Judging by the illustrations, the processor was cooled by a Phanteks PH-TC14PE cooler with a single fan located between the radiator sections. Recently it became known that with the help of liquid nitrogen such a processor can accelerate up to 6.1 GHz, but most potential customers are more interested in how the model will work in everyday modes. It should be added that the tests were carried out on an open stand, so in a closed case of the system unit the processor may behave differently. The frequency potential varies from instance to instance of the processor, it should also be taken into account.

In most tests, the results of which are summarized in the table below, the Ryzen 5 5600X processor was able to operate in six-core mode at a frequency of 4.7 to 4.8 GHz. To conquer the 4.95 GHz bar, only two cores and two threads had to be left active. This was justified because in the Geekbench Single Core tests the frequency of a small number of cores is important.

Most of these results were already considered by us yesterday, but their appearance in the HWBot database allows us to manipulate them more conveniently for comparison with the achievements of other processors. As already mentioned, its predecessor in the face of Ryzen 5 3600X new Ryzen 5 5600X bypasses on 22–25 %, depending on the application. The six-core Intel Core i5-10600K processor AMD is also noticeably inferior to the new processor, although we should not forget that the tests Ryzen 5 5600X were conducted at higher frequencies.

AMD Ryzen processors with Zen 3 architecture will go on sale in the coming days, but reviewers should already have samples for timely preparation of materials. Unofficial data on overclocking results have already begun to leak to the public. So far, the Vermeer six-core model manages to perform on equal terms with its predecessors.

An experienced Indonesian overclocker with the pseudonym Lucky_n00b registered the result of validation of Ryzen 5 5600X processor at 6124 MHz in the CPU-Z database. In this mode, the CPU-Z processor has all six cores and twelve threads. We can assume that liquid nitrogen was used to overclock the processor, as the existing Ryzen 5 3600XT processors reached such frequencies using this method of cooling. In the experiment was used MSI MAG B550 Tomahawk motherboard based on the logic set AMD B550, so we can not exclude that more expensive platforms based on AMD X570 will slightly improve the frequency result of the processor.

By the way, in the HWBot database, the record frequency for Ryzen 5 3600XT is 6155 MHz, with the processor combining the activity of six cores and six threads. The other six threads had to be disabled to ensure the stability of the processor. In other words, the Ryzen 5 5600X does not yet demonstrate any obvious progress in the frequency potential, although it should be released with a more advanced version of 7nm technology. A clearer idea of the extreme overclocking capabilities of Ryzen processors will be formed as the statistics and counters are filled, with only a few days left before the process starts.
